How do you decide what new books to purchase or accept as a donation for your library?  How are new books processed?  How do you tell your congregation about them?  How do you decide that it’s time to retire a book? Does your library have a page on your church website and/or other social media? Have you ever wondered what other church libraries do?

These topics and more will be covered in two work-shops at the Fall meeting!

1. Workshop 1 – Promoting Your Library

2. Workshop 2 – Library “Nuts & Bolts”
   Janet Brownell, leader – collection maintenance
   Laura Dirks, leader – cataloging and classification

The workshops are designed to encourage interactive participation and sharing of ideas. Each one is being offered twice to keep the groups smaller and so participants can attend both of them.

Our featured speaker is Rev. Lindsay Hardin Freeman.  She will discuss her groundbreaking book, Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter.

Per her website: “My passion is women of the Bible. Through writing and speaking, I share their stories. Scripture, tradition, reason, and humor are my tools. My goals are to free Bible women from their dreary literary caskets—and in that process, draw contemporary women deeper into God’s sacred circle.”

As always, there will be a book swap, time to visit the church library,  an opportunity to network with other librarians and lunch.

Special Message from the Board – “Be Our Guest”

The board members believe that Rev. Freeman’s presentation could be of interest to members of your church who aren’t on the library committee – e.g., Bible study and women’s groups.  This meeting could also be an opportunity for you to promote your library.

Your guests should be included on your registration form. As always, any member of your church can attend the meeting at the $15 member rate, even if s/he isn’t on the library committee.

Jessica Zillhart, talked about selection of religious materials in the public library  system. Jessica is currently a Materials Selection Librarian at the St. Paul Public Library. She’s also a member of Ebooks Minnesota’s collection development task force and she’s involved with the Digital Public Library of America’s Content Curation Corps for their Open Ebooks Initiative.  Her presentation was very interesting as well as enlightening.

Gary from Magers and Quinn Booksellers (3038 Hennepin Avenue South, Minneapolis 55408)  presented a lot of useful information on new and popular books.  Many of us were not aware of this bookstore. Gary Mazzone is their outreach and sales director-a great source of information for our group. Magers and Quinn Booksellers is the largest independent, family-owned bookstore in Minnesota.  As Gary reminded us small businesses are the mainstay of America and we are encouraged to support them.

A big thank you to all the publishers who donated books that Magers and Quinn could distribute at our meeting.  Everyone got 3 to 4 brand news books for their libraries.

The theme of the Fall meeting is “Selection.”  Our keynote speaker, Jessica Zillhart, will talk about selection of religious materials in the public library system. Jessica is currently a Materials Selection Librarian at the St. Paul Public Library. She’s also a member of Ebooks Minnesota’s collection development task force and she’s involved with the Digital Public Library of America’s Content Curation Corps for their Open Ebooks Initiative.   Jessica previously was employed by Anoka County Library as a Youth Materials Selector and by Mackin Educational Resources as a Collection Development Specialist.  She received her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Wisconsin.
